This is an excerpt from a talk I gave at Business Network International (BNI), Gurgaon Chapter, India).
The other day I was sitting in my room and working on my laptop as usual. It was a cold winter day, and as I was going through the hundreds of my travel photos I still needed to edit, my mobile phone rang. And when I answered it, it was Mr. Vikram Oberoi, CEO of Oberoi Group, and one of the leading hoteliers of the world! I was shocked that he was calling me! And the reason he was calling me was to give me some information regarding the heated pool at the Oberoi Sukhvilas in Chandigarh. What had happened was that a few days earlier I had contacted the GM at the Oberoi Sukhvilas in Chandigarh (India, where I live), and requested him to let me use the heated pool at the hotel. When he refused, I googled who the CEO of the Oberoi group was; it was Mr. Vikram Oberoi, and then I googled his email ID, and then I sent him an email requesting him to let me use the heated pool at the Oberoi hotel in Chandigarh. And instead of answering me by email, he called me from his mobile.
Most of the time we don't get things is because we don't ask. We don't write that email; we don't pick up the phone and call. Steve Jobs said in an interview that sometimes what separates people who achieve their dreams from those who only dream about them is that the people who achieve their dreams ask for what they want.
I remember the time when I was relatively small on social media. I had less than 5,000 followers, and I wanted to collaborate with a clothing brand to sponsor my outfits for an upcoming trip to New Zealand. I wrote to about twenty different brands out of which ten didn't reply, nine didn't want to collaborate, but there was this one brand from Denmark that agreed to give me clothes for my trip! And from all the brands I had written to, it was my favorite brand!
Sometimes it takes courage to ask for what we want, and for me, it gets me out of my comfort zone. But isn't it true that real progress happens only outside of one's comfort zone? Are there things you want to ask for but are hesitating even as you are reading this? You've got nothing to lose...ask for what you want!
