Located in the vibrant Sydney suburb of Newtown on Australia Street, is Rosie Boylan's hats shop and working millinery studio. In the 30 years of making hats, Rosie has perfected both her millinery skills as well as her subtle understanding of what makes a good hat. According to Rosie the best hats are the ones that go unnoticed because they compliment the features of the wearer rather than distract the viewer's gaze. Collaborating with feature film Oscar-winning costume designers, Rosie has created iconic bespoke headwear for The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge, Australia, The Piano and Peter Pan. She has also worked with television and theater as well as Australian fashion designers. You can visit Rosie at her studio by making a prior appointment with her on her mobile at 02 9557 1378.
I visited Rosie at her studio in my recent trip to Australia. It was a weekday and she was busy with her assistant creating custom orders for her special clients. I was on assignment shooting a clothing collection for a Danish fashion brand and needed hats to match the various outfits. After browsing through the various men's and women's casual styles on display, Rosie helped me select a few hats that best suited me by matching them to my facial features and personal style. Since the hats offered come in fractional sizes, I was able to find the perfect size hat for me.
Here are some of my pictures wearing Rosie's hats for the fashion campaign I was shooting for.
