Engstlensee is a natural lake located in the municipality of Innertkirchen in the Oberhasli district in Switzerland. It is located near Joch Pass at an elevation of 1850m. During the summer months buses run from Meiringen and Innertkirchen to Engstlenalp through the Gen Valley, which forks off from the Susten Pass road in the lower Gadmental. Private vehicles have to pay a toll fee.
I drove here with some friends I had connected with on my trip to Switzerland. We drove from Lucerne (I was staying at the Radisson Blu Lucerne hotel) at about 3pm in the afternoon and arrived at the Engstlensee at 5pm. It was raining for most part of our drive but cleared out as soon as we arrived at the lake. There is also a traditional mountain hotel located very close to the lake called Hotel Engstlenalp. It is about a 15 minute walk from the lake or a 2 minutes car drive.
The Engstlensee is on several hiking trails such as the Nidwaldner Höhenweg (high trail), ViaSbrinz and Via Alpina. You can stay at the hotel and go on hiking trails as well as enjoy the lake. There are also several opportunities for mountain biking. Boats are also available for hire at the lake. The route over the Joch Pass into the valley basin at Engelberg can also be traversed with chairlifts that operate in both summer and winter.
