We all know how important social media is to reach out to people, connect with old friends as well as grow a business. However, if we don't use it with restrain, it can also get very addictive, and make us dull-minded by killing our initiative and will-power.

The last couple of weeks have been a nightmare for me waking up with Instagram & Facebook and filling the little gaps of time I have had during the day with social-media. However, yesterday I decided to get my life back together. I did not switch on my phone till about noon. Even though it was difficult at first, I did get through without looking at it for the hours I had promised myself. I was overjoyed! And then I wrote this article. I came up with a list of things why too much of Instagramming and Facebooking is not good for me. Let me also know what you think in the comments below.

1. It produces a low self esteem

Checking my FB, social media and e-mail the first thing in the morning is depressing. It makes me feel unworthy of myself because in my heart I don't want to check my phone on waking up. When I am depressed and moody, I can't decide properly and I may not be able to see and think clearly. It creates within me a low self esteem because I know my bad habits are dictating me!

2. I find it difficult to be creative

There is so much happening on social media all the time and not all of it is good. The mind is like a clean sheet of paper in the morning and just scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed, I am absorbing everything that is there - the good and the bad and unfortunately there is more bad than good. And that kind of sets the tone for the day. My mind becomes a clutter - a storehouse of all sorts of things from what my friend wore to the forest fires in California. It is very difficult to be creative when your mind feels like a mess!

3. It makes me avoid reality

If I check my IG and FB the first thing in the morning, I find myself going back to it again and again throughout the day. It becomes such a bad distraction that when I have a difficult decision to make or a project to think about, I find myself reaching out for the phone!

4. It makes me procrastinate

Opening IG or FB is one hour of procrastination for me. I end up wasting a lot of time browsing through useless posts that don't add any value to my life. As a result, I am already running late for the day and am behind schedule for almost everything!

5. I live on reaction and not action

If I start my mornings with e-mail and social media, I start living on reaction and not action. If I don't look at my phone the first thing in the morning and practice meditation, the mind becomes naturally calm. I can list the things that I need to get done during the day and get solutions to problems.
