Lake Kawaguchiko, also known as the hot spring resort town, is located at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan and is the second largest of the Five Fuji Lakes. It is also the most easily accessible of the Five Fuji Lakes with direct train and bus connections to Tokyo. It has some of the best views of Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms in Japan.
It is one of the most popular spots for cherry blossom ('sakura' as the Japanese call it) viewing not only in Mount Fuji area but the whole of Japan. Cherry trees have been planted for about 1.2 kms along the northern shores of the lake. It is a favored spot among photographers for 'sakura' pictures with Mount Fuji in the background.
It is important to keep in mind that even though Kawaguchiko is located right at the base of Mount Fuji, the mountain is not always visible. I know of people who have spent two weeks here and not seen the peak at all! It is also more difficult to see the peak during summer months because of haze.
I visited Fuji in mid-April when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. I stayed at Hotel Mystays Fuji Onsen Resort and with the help of a tour guide, checked out the best spots for 'sakura' or cherry blossom viewing with Mount Fuji in the background. Luckily for me, the peak was visible on all the days I was in Fuji. However, the day I visited Lake Kawaguchiko, it was before sunrise and Mt. Fuji was still enveloped in clouds. I came back to the lake later in the day when the clouds had cleared out, and I enjoyed a nice walk along the shore with spectacular views of the mountain and cherry trees.
