Sofitel Legend Amsterdam the Grand is a luxurious five-star hotel located in the center of Amsterdam. I stayed there for two nights when I was visiting Amsterdam early this year. From the moment I entered the hotel and during the rest of my stay, I felt welcomed and looked after. Splendidly decorated in French elegance and grandeur, the hotel boasts a rich history. Over the centuries, the building has housed a 15th-century convent, royal lodgings, Dutch Admiralty headquarters and the city hall of Amsterdam. When the building became the site of the five-star hotel The Grand in 1992, the new owner did an excellent job of restoring the building. No expense was spared to replace or repair even the missing or damaged hinges and locks in the old style.
When I had just arrived in Amsterdam, I received an email from a friend who recommended me two places to visit there - one was the Riskjmuseum and the second was the Sofitel Grand! Well, that was convenient because I was already staying at the Grand!
1. The Grand lobby
Furnished with French elegance and grandeur, it was always a pleasure to walk into the Grand lobby. I also found it a great place to make work appointments and meet with people.
2. Historical Tour
The Grand building dates back to 1411 when it used to be a convent. Over the centuries, it has served as an elegant hotel, the seat of the city government, the office of the Admiralty of Amsterdam and after Netherlands regained independence, for the next 180 years as the Amsterdam City Hall. The Council Chamber and the First Class Marriage Chamber have been preserved as a heritage site at the hotel.

3. Garden Terrace
The Garden Terrace can be found in the beautiful and completely re-landscaped courtyard garden. It is one of Amsterdam's best kept secrets. An oasis of peace and tranquility, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it is a great place to unwind with a cup of coffee or tea.
4. Royal Breakfast
A truly royal breakfast is served at Bridges, the Michelin Star restaurant at the hotel. From traditional Dutch pancakes to delicious French Crêpes, pastries and freshly baked breads, as well as different kinds of cheese served with juice and coffee of course, I tried everything! They also served me champagne with breakfast!
5. Afternoon tea
The Grand serves the best Afternoon Tea in Amsterdam. From delicious crostini and traditional scones, served with jam, lemon curd and genuine Devonshire clotted cream, to handmade pastries, Afternoon Tea at the hotel is quite a lavish affair.

6. The Floral Boutique
The Floral Boutique, situated on the ground floor of the hotel, creates floral arrangements, bouquets and special gift baskets which can be ordered and delivered directly to the guest's room.
7. Grand Bike Tour
The best and the most Dutch way to explore Amsterdam is with a bike, and I was very happy to be able to rent a bike directly at the hotel.

8. Grand Boat tour
I enjoyed a boat tour organized by the hotel that took us over the narrowest canals of the old Amsterdam area 'de Jordaan' and through the heart of the red-light district with its canal-side houses. Tea and coffee with cake and cookies was served onboard. There were only 4 more guests and I found the price of Euro 38 quite reasonable for an almost private cruise that lasted an hour and a half.

Set over two floors, the So SPA as it is called, offers treatment rooms, an indoor heated swimming pool with jet stream and jacuzzi, a wet zone with Turkish steam bath (hamman), sauna and showers, a relaxation room and the So FIT exercise room with changing rooms. I treated myself to a 60 minute sports massage that was heavenly!
10. A room with a view
I had a superior room with a view of the canals that offered the perfect retreat for my soul after a wandering day in the city. Complete with a tea and coffee bar including a Nespresso machine, Hermès body care in the bathroom, a movie library and great in-room dining, I really enjoyed the comfort and amenities of the room.
