The Lydgate Beach State Park is one of the best family beaches in Kauai. It has two swimming areas enclosed by rocks that block off ocean waves. However, the fish still find a way to get in through the crevices making it the perfect beach for snorkeling, especially if you are a beginner. Even if you snorkel and haven't really snorkeled in a while, it is a great beach to get accustomed to it again before venturing off to other beaches like the Ke'e Beach or the Poipu Beach.
For my holiday in Kauai, I was staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in Kapaa which is located adjacent to the Lydgate Beach State Park. Every morning I used to walk to the swimming area for a swim and even though I didn't snorkel, I could clearly see the tropical fish swimming under me with my swim glasses. I actually found it a little weird to swim with the fish swimming under me, but I needed the exercise and the temptation of getting in the ocean water was well worth it! Since it is a family beach, it gets really crowded during the day with lots of families picnicking and children snorkeling or playing in the sand.
