The island of Kauai, also known as the 'Garden Island', is the fourth largest island in Hawaii. It is also the oldest and the northernmost. It is divided into four parts: North Shore, South Shore, West Shore and East Shore. I was in Kauai for six days and wished I had more time to explore the island. Here is a list of the top ten beaches in Kauai including activities, facilities, safety and driving directions. 

1. Anini Beach 

1. Activities

Swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, fishing, camping, polo matches (summer, Sundays). 

2. Facilities

Restrooms, showers, pavilions, picnic tables, BBQ grills. 

3. Safety

Very safe. 

4. Directions

Highway 56 North, pass Kilauea town, first right after Kalihiwai bridge onto Kalihiwai road, fork to the left.

2. Beach House

1. Activities

Snorkeling, surfing, fishing.

2. Facilities

Restrooms across the street.

3. Safety

Safe. 

4. Directions

Lawai Road before Spouting Horn.

3. Hanalei Bay (dangerous shore break winter)

1. Activities

Swimming (summer), surfing, walking/running, beachcombing.

2. Facilities

Restrooms, showers, pavilions, picnic tables, BBQ grills. 

3. Safety

Moderate to dangerous.

4. Directions

Highway 56 into Hanalei Valley, right on Aku, right on Weke Road, End of Weke Road.

4. Kalapaki Bay

1. Activities

Swimming, bodysurfing, surfing, windsurfing, canoeing. 

2. Facilities

Restrooms, showers.

3. Safety

Very safe. 

4. Directions

Highway 56 through Rice St. to Anchor Cove Plaza.

5. Ke'e Beach (strong current water)

1. Activities

Swimming, snorkeling, beachcombing.

2. Facilities

Restrooms, showers.

3. Safety

Safe to moderate. 

4. Directions

6. Lydgate Beach State Park

1. Activities

Swimming, snorkeling, fishing, camping, beachcombing.

2. Facilities

Restrooms, showers, pavilions, picnic tables, lifeguards, playground. 

3. Safety

Very safe. 

4. Directions

Highway 56- go North, pass Wailua Golf Course. Right on Leho Road.

7. Makua Beach (Tunnels)

1. Activities

Snorkeling, surfing, windsurfing, fishing. 

2. Facilities

None. 

3. Safety

Safe to moderate.

4. Directions

Highway 56, drive through Hanalei town, pass Hanalei Colony Restaurant, pass YMCA camp - .5 miles past the 8 mile marker.

8. Poipu Beach Park

1. Activities

Swimming, snorkeling, bodysurfing, beachcombing, fishing.

2. Facilities

Restrooms, showers, pavilions, picnic tables, BBQ grills, lifeguard. 

3. Safety

Safe. 

4. Directions

Poipu Road towards Hyatt Regency, right on Hoowili Road. Proceed to 'stop' sign on Hoohe Road. 

9. Polihale Beach Park (high surf, shore breaks, strong current)

1. Activities

Surfing, bodysurfing, beachcombing, camping. 

2. Facilities

Restrooms, showers, pavilions, picnic tables, BBQ grills. 

3. Safety

Very dangerous. 

4. Directions

End of Route 50. After 32 mile mark, left turn onto Cane Road. Follow state signs for 5 miles. 

10. Salt Pond Beach Park

1. Activities

Swimming, snorkeling. 

2. Facilities

Restrooms, showers, pavilions, picnic tables. 

3. Safety

Safe. 

4. Directions

Highway 50 - turn left onto Highway 543. Right turn on Loloka Road.
