I was in Kauai, Hawaii Islands for 5 nights and 6 days. I flew Hawaii airlines from Los Angeles to Lihue and United on my way back. I was traveling solo and it was also my first trip to the island. Since I had limited time on my hands, I wanted to make sure I carried everything for my holiday in Kauai and did not need to waste time shopping there. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, Kapaa, a beautiful hotel located right on Lydgate Beach State Park, the number one family beach in Kauai. The hotel provided the guests with beach towels, mats and water coolers. Snorkel gear could be rented from nearby shops. I went in the month of August when it was really hot and there were many tourists there. Here is my packing list for Kauai.
1. Extra swimsuits
I carried three swimsuits and wished I had packed one more! Even if you are not always on the beach in Kauai, chances are that you will still get wet! I loved standing under waterfalls, swimming in tide pools and jumping in lakes and rivers! Swimsuits take forever to dry and having some extra ones, ensured that I didn't have to wear wet swimsuits over and over again!
2. Beach dresses
If you want to look pretty, beach dresses are a great option on the island of Kauai. Besides wearing them on the beach, you can even hike in them! Pretty beach dresses make excellent multi-functional swim cover-ups! I bought mine at www.jcrew.com and wore it after a swim at the pool on the base of the Wailua Falls. Then hiked back in the dress!
3. Shorts & tees
Shorts and tees always come in handy for an island vacation. They are great for hiking or just roaming about in town. I always wore my swimsuit under my shorts and tee - so I could jump in the water whenever I wanted!
4. Tote Bag
A tote bag in which you can carry a towel and an extra swimsuit is something you can't do without on the island! I bought mine at www.thereformation.com and always had some dry clothes with me just incase I got wet and needed a change.
5. Cross-body Bag
A cross-body bag is a great option for hiking trips so you can have your hands free and still have your phone and other essentials with you. I was lucky that my companion on the island was an experienced hiker and carried the camera bag with the DSLR camera and my tote bag! With my hands free, I concentrated on the hiking trail!
6. Hat & Sunglasses
A nice sun hat that not only protects you from the sun but also looks pretty on you, is a must for your beach vacation in Kauai. I bought my hats at www.thereformation.com. If you go in summertime (I went in early August), it can get very hot during the day and you will need a good pair of sunglasses.
7. Rain Jacket & Umbrella
Kauai weather is very unpredictable and it can start raining at any time of the day without any prior warning. A rain jacket is something you will want to have for your trip so that when it rains, instead of sitting in your hotel room, you can go out and click pictures of the rainbow! I bought my rain jacket at www.patagonia.com. My rain jacket also served as an excellent wind jacket.
8. Jeans, lace up shoes & a warm jacket
If you are taking a helicopter tour (especially a doors-off one), jeans or full-leg trousers with sturdy lace-up shoes and a warm jacket is a must. In any case, it is good to have a warm jacket for sudden cold weather on the island.
9. Water shoes & flip flops
10. A semi formal dress & matching shoes
Even though people dress up very casually on the island, you might find some restaurants and bars where the dress code is rather formal for Kauai. It's good to have something less casual for a formal evening dinner during your vacation.
11. Hiking pack to carry your camera gear & other belongings
If you want to create great memories for your vacation, Kauai is full of stunning locations where you will want to click more and more pictures! It's good to have a good backpack in which you can hike and at the same time have your camera and other belongings secure.
12. Bug Spray & mosquito repellant
More than once I got badly bitten with mosquitoes in Kauai! If you are going for hikes or even to beaches, you must protect yourself with mosquito repellants and bug sprays.
